This watering can is crafted by a cooperative of metal artisans in Dakar, Senegal, who have been working with recycled metals for generations. The cooperative, called "Métal Créatif," was founded in 2008 by master craftsman Moussa Diop with the mission of preserving traditional metalworking techniques while creating sustainable livelihoods.
The artisans collect discarded metal items—primarily food cans, old tools, and scrap metal—from local communities, cleaning and processing them before transforming them into beautiful, functional products. Each artisan brings their unique style and expertise to the creation process, resulting in watering cans that are similar in function but distinctive in character.
The cooperative now employs 15 artisans, including 7 women who have broken traditional gender barriers in metalworking. They also run an apprenticeship program that trains young people in these sustainable craft techniques, ensuring these skills continue into the next generation.
